for what it’s worth…

At the encouragement of my new BFF, Christina, I decided to try online dating again. She refers to it as “online lurking” because I’m not actually going on dates with these people. Ha. While the intensity of my passionate disposition makes this (far from efficient, I’m finding) process somewhat exhausting, I have to say I have laughed harder and more often in the past week than I have in a month of Sundays. The tragedy that is my OK Cupid inbox is hilarious. And also just tragic. haha.

I have experientially discovered that The Internet does not mediate awkwardness as effectively as we tend to hope ~ if you’re socially awkward in real life, you’re socially awkward on the internet (myself included).

I am such a chemistry-dependent individual that I am entirely ambivalent about how effective online lurking is going to be for me. At the very least, it’s sharpening my cross-gender interpersonal skills, so there’s that. But I do find the mystery of attraction incredibly fascinating. Two guys could send the *exact* same message, and the only thing that keeps it from being creepy is whether or not I’m attracted to him. I also think it has something to do with the social intelligence of recognizing how you present in comparison to your “peer” group; like, it takes a certain kind of judgement to know if you’re hot enough to pull off having a parrot on your shoulder in your profile pic. Some people lack that judgement.

happy weekend,

OH. also hilarious is the fact that OKC forces you to come up with a username, which is incredibly entertaining. Kind of like a “if forced to select an online username, what do you choose?” screening question haha.
